San Francisco, CA – The Curran is proud to present The Events as the inaugural production of “Curran: Under Construction,” the ground-breaking series of intimate and non-traditional programming that was recently announced. The four-night engagement will begin Wednesday, September 23 at the Curran (445 Geary St). The Curran is particularly excited that The Events will boast the talents of approximately 85 local vocalists, as the production features an array of community choirs. The Events kicks-off a new era for the historic theatre, which is undergoing a major renovation and will reopen as a full-sized venue in early 2017. Throughout “Curran: Under Construction,” audiences will enter through the Curran’s stage door alleyway and be seated on stage alongside the action.
Award-winning Scottish playwright David Greig‘s The Events is a drama about a survivor in the aftermath of a tragedy, and her crisis of faith in the wake of unthinkable violence. Taking a deep-dive into the subjects of faith, politics, and reason, Ramin Gray and The Actors Touring Company production of The Events has been greeted with acclaim internationally.
This inventive production features a different local community choir at each performance, drawn from diverse communities throughout the Bay Area. The performance schedule includes the Most Holy Redeemer Church Choir (Wednesday, 9/23), San Francisco Sound Wave (Thursday, 9/24), and The U4C Berkeley Chorus (Friday, 9/25 and Saturday, 9/26).
With a book by David Greig, and music by John Browne, The Events will feature direction by Ramin Gray, stage design by Chloe Lamford, lighting design by Charles Balfour, and sound design by Alex Caplen. The Events was the hit of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2013, where it earned five-star reviews, along with a Fringe First and the Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award. The Events played at New York Theater Workshop in early 2014, and after its engagement in San Francisco will move on to the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis. This production of The Events is led by Lesley Hart and Clifford Samuel.
“Curran: Under Construction” features an array of wildly inventive and diverse works, each with ties to the Bay Area. In addition to The Events, this ground-breaking festival will include The Object Lesson, Ghost Quartet, Steve Cuiffo is Lenny Bruce, Story Pirates’ Greatest Hits Show, Stew – Notes of a Native Song, and Taylor Mac’s 24-Decade History of Popular Music.
