New York, NY (April 23, 2025) – Today, producer Mike Bosner announced 10 Things I Hate About You, based on the beloved 1999 Touchstone Pictures film written by Karen McCullah and Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith, is being adapted for the stage as a new musical. The show is being developed for Broadway with a score by GRAMMY® Award nominee Carly Rae Jepsen and GRAMMY Award winner Ethan Gruska, book by Emmy Award® nominee and Golden Globe Award® winner Lena Dunham and award-winning playwright Jessica Huang, direction and choreography by two-time Tony Award® winner Christopher Wheeldon, and music supervision, arrangements, and orchestrations by two-time Tony Award winner Tom Kitt.

10 Things I Hate About You, a retelling of William Shakespeare’s 1594 play The Taming of the Shrew, launched the careers of Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt and showcased a breakout performance by Alison Janney. The film was a box office hit and gained cult status thanks to its keen and witty examination of teenage life in a 1990s Seattle suburb and the nuanced portrayal of sisters Kat and Bianca Stratford.

Since its release, the film has been celebrated by critics and fans and was included in EW’s list of Best High School Movies of All Time. Ledger’s iconic performance of the Frankie Valli and Bob Gaudio’s classic “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” in the film has become inspiration for numerous marriage proposals and viral videos.

10 Things I Hate About You is produced by Bosner by special arrangement with Buena Vista Theatrical.

BIOGRAPHIES

Carly Rae Jepsen (Score). Multi-platinum GRAMMY nominated and Juno and Billboard Music Award winner Jepsen’s knack for distilling a sea of emotions into brilliant songcraft has wooed critics as deeply as fans. The singer, songwriter first burst onto the international scene in 2012 with the sly and sublime “Call Me Maybe.” That blockbuster hit from her breakthrough album, Kiss, topped charts in over 47 countries and earned her two GRAMMY® nominations for Best Pop Solo Performance and Song of the Year. Since then, she’s amassed even more acclaim across the music spectrum. Jepsen’s 2015 critically lauded and culture-defining E*MO*TION landed on multiple year-end “Best Of” lists while her 2019 follow-up, Dedicated, covered even more musical and emotional ground with The Atlantic calling the album “brilliant.” Jepsen emerged from a period of isolation in the fall of 2022 with The Loneliest Time expanding on the emotionally potent songwriting and effervescent sound that Jepsen has showcased on past work. Jepsen’s B sides projects have always offered a deep dive into her creative process with fans anxiously awaiting the release of E*MO*TION Side B, Dedicated Side B, and The Loveliest Time.

In addition to her career as a recording artist, Jepsen landed the lead role in the 2014 Broadway production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella and later starred as the iconic Pink Lady, Frenchy, in Fox’s four-time Emmy Award-winning musical Grease: Live.
