New York, NY (January 18, 2013) – The record breaking, award-winning Off-Broadway play Tribes will end its monumental run, playing its final performance this Sunday evening, January 20, 2013 at the Barrow Street Theatre (27 Barrow Street) after 19 preview and 365 regular performances. The celebrated West Village theater will next be home to the New York Premiere of Ike Holter’s Hit the Wall, which begins previews on February 19, 2013, with an official opening night set for March 10, 2013.
Written by Nina Raine and directed by multiple Lortel and Obie Award-winner David Cromer, the closing cast features Susannah Flood, Russell Harvard (2012 Theater World Award winner), Lee Roy Rogers, Jeff Still, Dina Thomas and Nick Westrate (winner of a 2012 Special Drama Desk Award).
The most nominated new play of the season, Tribes garnered 20 awards nominations and was declared “Best Play” by New York Drama Desk, “Best Foreign Play” by the New York Drama Critics Circle and “Best New Play” by the Off-Broadway Alliance. For his New York debut, Russell Harvard received the 2012 Theatre World Award. It was previously announced Tribes had officially recouped its entire investment.
In Tribes, Billy was born deaf into a hearing family, and raised inside the fiercely idiosyncratic and unrepentantly politically incorrect cocoon of his parents’ house. He has adapted brilliantly to his family’s unconventional ways, but they’ve never bothered to return the favor. It’s not until he meets Sylvia, a young woman on the brink of deafness, that he finally understands what it means to be understood.
The design team for Tribes includes Scenic Design by multiple Tony Award®-winner Scott Pask, Costume Design by Tristan Raines, Lighting Design by Keith Parham, Sound Design by Daniel Kluger, Projection Design by Jeff Sugg and Casting by Pat McCorkle. The Production Stage Manager is Richard A. Hodge.
