New York, NY (8/23/12) – The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel is pleased to welcome back legendary singer/songwriter Judy Collins for her sixth engagement at the iconic venue, Café Carlyle. Ms. Collins' three week engagement runs September 11 through September 29 where she will be joined by her musical director Russell Walden. Stephen Holden of the New York Times hails Ms. Collins performance as evoking “the kind of ethereal, far-sighted reflection that is her special artistic territory”. Ms. Collins unique blend of interpretative folksongs and contemporary themes have captivated audiences for over fifty years and landed her a spot in the Grammy Hall of Fame.
Ms. Collins’ rendezvous at the Café Carlyle will feature beloved hits from her recent album Bohemian including Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’s “Pure Imagination”, Woody Guthrie’s “Pastures of Plenty”, Jimmy Webb’s “Campo De Encino” and Ms. Collins’ own “In The Twilight” which she wrote about her mother.
The Café Carlyle is located in The Carlyle – 35 East 76th Street at Madison Avenue. Judy Collins will play Tuesdays through Saturdays at 8:45PM. There is a $110 music charge ($75 at bar) for the Tuesday-Thursday performances and a $135 music charge ($85, bar) on Friday and Saturday evenings. Every Monday night at 8:45PM (September 10 through December 17), Woody Allen appears with the Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band. There is a $135 music charge ($95, bar). Biography
Judy Collins has thrilled audiences worldwide with her unique blend of interpretative folksongs and contemporary themes. Her impressive career has spanned more than 50 years. In 1961, Judy Collins released her first album, A Maid of Constant Sorrow, at the age of 22 and began a thirty-five year association with Jac Holzman and Elektra Records.
Judy Collins is noted for her rendition of Joni Mitchell's “Both Sides Now” on her classic 1967 album, Wildflowers. “Both Sides Now” has since been entered into the Grammy's Hall of Fame. Winning “Song of the Year” at the 1975 Grammy's Awards show was Judy's version of “Send in the Clowns,” a ballad written by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical A Little Night Music.
In August 2012, Judy Collins Live at The Metropolitan Museum of Art: Celebrating Fifty Years of Timeless Music premiered as part of THIRTEEN’s August membership drive where Ms. Collins showcased the biggest hits of her amazing career in front of The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s magnificent Temple of Dendur. THIRTEEN’s sister station, WLIW21, distributed the program nationwide to public television stations.
Ms. Collins' autobiography, SWEET JUDY BLUE EYES: My Life In Music, reveals the memories behind the music, from her debut at age thirteen to the heyday of free love—and a long road to recovery from loss and addiction. Currently only available in hardcover, it will be released in paperback in October 2012.
In a recent appearance on ABC's “Good Morning America,” Judy performed “Wings of Angels,” the heartbreaking ballad that she wrote about the loss of her son. The song is currently available on the newly released Judy Collins Wildflower Festival CD and DVD, which also feature guest artists Arlo Guthrie, Tom Rush and Eric Andersen. This extraordinary concert was filmed at the famed Humphrey's By the Bay in San Diego, CA. The concert was the culmination of a 25 city national tour.
In September 2007, Ms. Collins released a new solo recording – Judy Collins Sings Lennon & McCartney. A year later saw the release of Born to the Breed: A Tribute to Judy Collins with guest artists including Leonard Cohen, Chrissie Hynde and Dolly Parton singing songs from Ms. Collins’ treasured catalogue. In June 2010, Paradise was released in conjunction with a children’s picture book “Over The Rainbow” (Imagine! Books), which contains a 3-song CD, including Ms. Collins’ performance of the classic song. Her newest recording, Bohemian, features Kenny White, Shawn Colvin and Ollabelle.
