Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened

Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened

Broadway icons Stephen Sondheim and Harold Prince were riding high on a series of hit musicals when they embarked on their next collaboration, Merrily We Roll Along, in 1981, a musical that was met with critical pans and a swift closing notice.  Original cast member Lonny Price, having unearthed a collection of never-before-seen footage of build-up to the show’s Opening Night, directs the new documentary Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened, a wildly entertaining and ultimately moving portrait of the incredible promise and sobering reality of life on The Great White Way.  In interviews with Sondheim, Prince as well as original cast members Jason Alexander, Jim Walton, Ann Morrison, Abigail Pogrebin and many more, Best Worst Thing chronicles not only Merrily’s auspicious origins but also its resurrection, over the last several decades, as one of Sondheim most beloved and oft-produced works.  Best Worst Thing premiered at the 54th Annual New York Film Festival on October 9, 2016 and was released in theaters on November  in New York City and November 25, 2016 in Los Angeles.
