Every day is opening night.

“IT COULDN’T PLEASE ME MORE”

Ladies and gents,

We need to come up with a better word than “replacement” for a performer who takes over a role mid-run. This was the conclusion I came to at Thursday’s official opening night for Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club’s two new stars, Adam Lambert and Auli’i Cravalho.

Why does the word “replacement” fall so flat? Two reasons: anyone who was a fan of Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin’s takes on the Emcee and Sally Bowles, respectively, knows that there is simply no replacing them. Lucky for theatergoers, Lambert and Cravalho aren’t attempting to. They are reinventing these characters from scratch and the result is gloriously satisfying.

The crowd was every bit as enthralled as I was! Among the stars who joining me the evening’s multiple mid-show standing ovations were evening hosts Darren Criss, Queen’s Roger Taylor and producer Adam Speers, plus Kaia Gerber, Jake Shears, Annaleigh Ashford, Constance Wu, Peppermint, Susanne Bartsch, Aquaria, Padma Lakshmi, Zoe Chao, Michael Arden, Linux, Hannah Corbin, Matty Miggiacomo, Genesis Webb, Andrew Dahling, Scott Wittman, Anna Baryshnikov, Billy Magnussen, Jessica King, Bobby Conte and Martyna Majok.

And, yes, the remaining original cast members are still firing on all cylinders. But, as the Emcee might say, don’t take my word for it, ask fellow audience member Darren Criss — who was crying uncontrollably every time Bebe Neuwirth opened her mouth to sing.

As for me, as for me, an old lover spotted me in my seat and had the server bring over a bottle of champagne. Unable to drink an entirely bottle by myself, I asked for a few extra coup glasses, and instantly became the most popular patron in row E!

Saturday you might have found me at the St. James for the first preview of Jamie Lloyd’s new production of Sunset Blvd. More on that next week, but safe to say I sobbed harder than Darren Criss during a Bebe Neuwirth solo!

Tidbits from around town…

Spotted Margaret Qualley riding her bike to Rockefeller Center for her “Tonight Show” appearance promoting her new film, The Substance.

Overheard Kyle Chandler telling a friend that he thinks, “The Bills are going to go all the way.”

Caught Sarah Silverman ordering a matcha in midtown. As always, a toast of something sparkling to you and yours!

Kisses,
