Michelle Aravena
Michelle Aravena joins us On The Couch this week, having recently joined the company of Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club at the August Wilson Theatre. A triple treat, Aravena’s career has seen her take on iconic roles in A Chorus Line, Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia, Les Misérables and most recently, Beetlejuice.
Read our full interview here, where Michelle shows thanks for the small things (all those who commute from NJ into the city will understand!), and explains the embarrassing moment when she didn’t recognize the legendary Terrance McNally.
What do you consider to be your best asset?
I genuinely get along with just about everybody and anybody. Finding ways to connect and communicate with all personalities. Some are harder than others, but my subconscious goal is to surround myself with the energy I thrive in. I just want to have fun and laugh!
What was your proudest moment?
The moment in time I’m most proud of is how my fellow artist and I survived the pandemic. I have been in this business professionally since I was nine years old. I never took another path, never wanted to. When our world crashed, and we were left to fend for ourselves I saw our (artists) resilience at its best. We were forced to find ways to support ourselves. Not knowing when we would get back on stage. I watched friends start businesses, go back to school, start new chapters and careers. I myself found a new passion I didn’t know was there. I started an audition preparation business for young adults called Bookedbymichelle.com. Watching the younger generation continue to work and fight to be a part of an industry that was, at the time, crumbling gave me the strength to keep fighting. I never thought I would own a business, I never thought I would find something I was equally as passionate about but i did, and that makes me proud.

What do you consider to be the single greatest threat to your health?
Stress. I can’t tell you how many times a day I say, “breath Aravena. Just breath”.
What is the single best trait you inherited from your parents?
Definitely my work ethic. My parents busted their butts working multiple jobs at a time to make sure we had everything we ever wanted. Our happiness (siblings) was their main goal and because of their hard work they have three kids who have successful careers doing what they love.
What is the single worst trait you inherited from your parents?
Hmmmmm, no answer for that.
What in the world most thrills you?
I’m an adrenaline seeker! Whether that’s jumping out of a plane, scary movies, seeing how long I can drive with the gas light on. I know, i know it’s bad for your car. I literally ask people to purposely find ways to scare me backstage. They always get a good Hollywood scream out of it.
What current trend in popular culture most irritates you?
The Bachelor and Bachelorette! I like reality tv, but I roll my eyes at that one
What was the most embarrassing moment you’ve ever experienced at a job?
I was doing press for an upcoming show at a theater that had multiple productions they we’re promoting. We all sat in a row waiting for our interview. I was seated next to a very sweet man who leaned over and asked what show I was doing. I answered and then politely asked him what show he was doing. Before he could answer they introduced him to the press and asked him for his interview. It was Terrance McNally.
What is your favorite place in the world?
Disney World of course.
What is the most important trait you seek in a romantic partner?
Patience.

Dogs but only because I’m allergic to cats. I’m a Boston terrier girl. My guy’s name is Reggie. He’s a handful but the man of my house!
What would have to happen to make today the best day of your life?
I have to be honest, feeling pretty lucky and blessed these days. Going to enjoy this moment of contentment because this too, shall pass. But if I had to answer I would say no traffic getting to work would make this a pretty great day!
What is your personal motto?
All in this together!
