Every day is opening night.

RESCUED

Ladies and gents,

Broadway loves a comeback, but even the most seasoned theatergoers couldn’t have anticipated the astonishing second act of Swept Away, with this Avett Brothers-scored tale of survival-at-all-costs becoming living proof of its own concept.

I’m old enough to remember when it was looking like curtains for Swept Away. Notice had been posted. Load-out had been scheduled. The press release had been … released. But then something extraordinary happened. Word of the show’s impending closing sparked a surge in ticket sales — not a trickle, a tidal wave. A tsunami, even!

Stark Sands, delivering the news directly from the stage, likened the show’s journey to its own narrative themes: “The story we tell is about the will to survive against incredible odds… We came to work the next day, and we walked out to a completely sold-out house. And then the next day it happened again.” Now, all this demand has buoyed the unlikely Broadway voyage, and it’s now staying afloat through December 29.

Under Michael Mayer’s steady hand, with a hauntingly powerful book by John Logan, and a score from the Avett BrothersSwept Away is 90 minutes of riveting, soul-stirring, life-affirming theater.  Run, don’t sail, to the Longacre!

Tidbits from around town…

Spotted Paul Mescal hosting a table of friends at Café Chelsea before the group sped uptown to see Gracie Abrams perform on (and Chris Rock host) “SNL.”

Caught Dana Ivey enjoying a weekend matinee of The Roommate.

Overheard Lorna Luft stopping Lisa Kron on 54th Street to gush over Kron’s work on the third season of MAX’s “Somebody, Somewhere.”

As always, a toast of something sparkling to you and yours!

Kisses,
