Andy Kelso

Andy Kelso

With the fabulous, luminous, Broadway-changing Kinky Boots coming to an end this weekend, we’ve got a special treat for you. A lot has changed for Andy Kelso, current ‘Charlie Price’ and original ‘Harry’ in Kinky Boots on Broadway, since 2015 when he answered this “On The Couch” questionnaire! So, after getting married (he proposed on stage at the Hirschfeld!), having a baby (with another on the way!), read on to see what Andy sees differently now… and what will remain timeless.

What do you consider to be your best asset?
My unmatched talent for navigating questionnaire interviews.

What was your proudest moment?
Not screwing anything up (that was caught on camera) during the Tony Awards telecast!!!
2019: BECOMING A FATHER!

What is your favorite drink?
Scotch…something smoky.
2019: Still like this answer and will add New England Style IPAs.

What is your favorite food?
Italian.

What is your favorite condiment?
Stone ground mustard.

What is your current obsession?
Podcasts.  Right now it’s Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History.
2019: Besides DIY projects at home, I’m still hooked on podcasts. Staples include: The Daily, All Song Considered, & Radiolab.

If you could give up one of your vices, what would it be?
Facebook.
2019: SAME. Still have that love/hate relationship with social media!

What is the one professional accomplishment you long for most?
Inspiring, consistent work and to never have to have a ‘survival job’ again.
2019: Still pretty much sums it up!

What is the one thing you waste too much money on?
Technology.  Whether is a computer, a camera, or a record player, I always convince myself that I MUST have the best of the best…which is totally not true.

What is the one activity you waste too much time doing?
If you knew how long it is taking me to fill out this simple questionnaire….
2019: RESEARCHING PURCHASES ONLINE. I get WAY too into reading reviews and exploring my options and 9 times out of 10 end up with the thing I was going to buy in the first place.

What do you consider to be the single greatest threat to your health?
6 inch heels!!
2019: And toddlers.

What is the single best trait you inherited or learned from your parents?
Kindness.

What is the single worst trait you inherited or learned from your parents?
Decision making when it comes the stupid things like “where should we go for dinner?” This question will never get answered and is THE WORST.

What in the world most thrills you?
Travel.
2019: My son dancing and singing.

What current trend in popular culture most irritates you?
Reality TV.  I thought it would be something that came and went, but it won’t go away!!!!

What was the single most embarrassing moment you’ve ever experienced on the job?
I “went up” on the lyrics during the duet section of ‘As Long As You’re Mine’ in Wicked.  It threw both of us off and for about a decade, we sang “blah, blah, blah” in harmony until we finally got back on track. I thought for sure my life/career was over.

What is your favorite place in the world?
Cheesy as it is, it could be anywhere if I’m with Sheila, my wife. But to be more specific…I love it here right now: Fall in NYC!  However, we’re heading to Italy in a couple weeks and if what I’ve heard is true, that MAY become the front runner.
2019: Also-ITALY!

What is the most important trait you seek in a romantic partner?
Sense of humor.

Do you prefer the company of dogs or cats?
Dogs!

What would have to happen to make today the best day of your life?
Hmmm….Surprise Radiohead Album, Broncos win the Super Bowl, book a hit new TV show/Broadway show/film, date night with dinner next to an outdoor fire, chat with a legend like Paul McCartney, all of my TV shows have season premiers, and CHRISTMAS!
2019: Haha. That sounds amazing. I don’t know about it being the BEST day of my life, but these days, I’ll settle for a quick weekend getaway with my gorgeous wife!

What is your personal motto?
Everything in its right place.
