Alex Lacamoire

When you orchestrate two of the best shows on Broadway, then take home Tonys for both, it’s safe to assume you’re pretty talented. Alex Lacamoire has one of the best ears in the business, having orchestrated the past two Tony Award-winning Best Musicals: Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen. Alex’s other projects have included 9 to 5 and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights. Coming up, he will be Music Directing Carmen Jones, an upcoming Cuban adaptation of George Bizet’s masterpiece. We are so lucky to have this extraordinary talent On the Couch.

What do you consider to be your best asset?
My curiosity.

What was your proudest moment?
Anytime I feel like I’ve done a good job and then get praise from someone who I admire/respect/love, I beam with pride.

What is your favorite drink?
A good chocolate milkshake.

What is your favorite food?
Cuban food.

What is your favorite condiment?
Guac (Yes, I know it’s extra).

What is your current obsession?
The new Sgt. Pepper’s 50th Anniversary box set. And Solitaire on my iPhone .

If you could give up one of your vices, what would it be?
The need to exhaust all possible options before making a damn decision.

What is the one professional accomplishment you long for most?
Conducting a full orchestra at a big venue (Carnegie, Hollywood Bowl, Abbey Road, etc).

What is the one thing you waste too much money on?
Cabs.

What is the one activity you waste too much time doing?
Typing.

What do you consider to be the single greatest threat to your health?
Carrying my iPhone in my back pocket.

What is the single best trait you inherited or learned from your parents?
From Mom: Patience.
From Dad: Strength.

What is the single worst trait you inherited or learned from your parents?
From Mom: Procrastination.
From Dad: Tunnel-Vision.

What in the world most thrills you?
That moment when you’re watching a live band and someone plays an amazing fill that just knocks your ass out.

What current trend in popular culture most irritates you?
Trolling.

What was the single most embarrassing moment you’ve ever experienced on the job?
I once had a job interview where I mentioned a musical and said “I’d never see that show”, and the interviewer said “I directed that show.”

What is your favorite place in the world?
Hawaiiiiiiii

What is the most important trait you seek in a romantic partner?
That they be my wife.

Do you prefer the company of dogs or cats?
We have a gorgeous and wonderful cat (it came with my wife when she moved in), but I’m actually more of a dog-guy.

What would have to happen to make today the best day of your life?
I’d have to be jamming with one of my idols (Paul McCartney, Rush, Peter Gabriel, Billy Joel, etc)

What is your personal motto?
Anything can happen to anyone at anytime. So live a life where you’re nice to people and where you don’t have any regrets.
