JULIE SET FOR JUNE 11

New York, NY (June 3, 2014) – The Tony®-nominated new Broadway play Mothers and Sons is proud to announce that the production has partnered with the 30/30 Project and Construction for Change. Julie Lewis, 30-year HIV Survivor and mother to Grammy-winner Ryan Lewis, founded the 30/30 Project, which seeks to bring healthcare facilities to communities impacted by HIV/AIDS, as well as offering comprehensive healthcare.

Post-show donation collection, proceeds from Mothers and Sons merchandise, and other items in support of the 30/30 Project will go towards Construction for Change, the organization who will oversee construction management and funding of the new medical facilities.

Following the Wednesday, June 11th evening performance, there will be a post-show “TalkOut” with Julie Lewis and cast members, where they will discuss strides the HIV/AIDS community has made in the last 30 years and strides yet to make.

“Broadway truly is the longest street in the world and with the right collaboration, like ours with Julie Lewis' 30/30 Project, we can all change the world and bring a global end to HIV infections,” said Tom Kirdahy, lead producer of Mothers and Sons.

“I want to do something big. The 30/30 Project is that big idea. We believe that healthcare is a human right. We have the knowledge and we have the treatments. Life threatening diseases like HIV/AIDS can be managed. What people need is access,” said Julie Lewis.

“We are thrilled that the 30/30 Project has teamed up with the Tony®-nominated play Mothers and Sons in support of HIV awareness and education. This vital play keeps the message going strong, and are proud to lend our voices to help this cause,” said Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.

Mothers and Sons, the new play by 4-time Tony Award® winner Terrence McNally, is a timely and provocative new play that explores our evolving understanding of family in today’s world.  At turns funny and powerful, Mothers and Sons follows a woman (Daly) who pays an unexpected visit to the New York apartment of her late son's ex-partner (Weller), who is now married to another man (Steggert) and has a young son. Challenged to face how society has changed around her, generations collide as she revisits the past and discovers a new connection she never expected.

The design team for Mothers and Sons includes scenic design by John Lee Beatty, costume design by Jess Goldstein, lighting design by Jeff Croiter, and sound design by Nevin Steinberg.

Mothers and Sons had its world premiere production at Bucks County Playhouse (Jed Bernstein, Producing Director) on June 13, 2013.  Tyne Daly also starred in that production.  Mr. McNally's other works for Broadway include Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune; The Full Monty; Ragtime; Master Class; Love! Valour! Compassion!; Kiss of the Spider Woman; The Rink; The Ritz; and Bad Habits.

About the 30/30 Project: Julie Lewis, 30-year HIV Survivor and mother to Ryan, founded the campaign, which seeks to bring healthcare facilities to communities impacted by HIV/AIDS, as well as offering comprehensive healthcare. To celebrate this mark of surviving for 30 years with HIV, Julie seeks to build medical centers worldwide that will sustain for at least 30 years. In an emotional video in support of the project, Ryan Lewis tells his rarely discussed personal journey growing up with a mother infected with HIV. Julie, who contacted the virus in 1984 via a blood transfusion, was infected for several years before being diagnosed with the virus. During that time, Ryan and his sister were both born free of HIV, despite having a 25% chance of contracting the disease.

Wanting to find a way to celebrate her amazing journey as a survivor, she launched the 30/30 Project to have a positive impact on the lives of other women, girls, and families who haven’t had the same access to healthcare opportunities that she’s had. Along with Construction for Change, who will oversee construction management and funding of the new medical facilities, 30/30 Project has an immediate goal of five new facilities, the first of which in Malawi, a country in Sub-Saharan Africa. Their local partner in Malawi, Partners in Health, APZU and the Ministry of Health will staff each health center with qualified professional healthcare providers.
