New York, NY (October 23, 2014) – John Guare has written a new play commemorating the 30th Anniversary of Rockwell Group. Between, a new 10-minute play, will have its world premiere performance on Monday, November 3 at NeueHouse at an event celebrating the launch of the forthcoming book, What If… ?: The Architecture and Design of David Rockwell. Jack O’Brien directs the performance, which will star Stockard Channing and Mr. Guare himself. The full text of the play is included in the new book.
Described as “a Rockwell interior meets a 10-minute play,” Between is a conversation between two people in a Rockwell-designed restaurant. Over the course of their conversion, souls are searched, secrets are revealed, and the transformative power of a space is proven.
Mr. Guare and David Rockwell collaborated on the 2010 Lincoln Center production of Mr. Guare’s play A Free Man of Color, directed by George C. Wolfe. A three-time Tony Award-nominated scenic designer, Mr. Rockwell is represented this season on Broadway with You Can’t Take It With You, Side Show, and On The 20th Century. Among the other Broadway productions he has designed are Kinky Boots, Lucky Guy, Hairspray, The Normal Heart, and The Rocky Horror Show.
Widely admired for his sophistication, creativity and exuberance, David Rockwell is one of the leading architects, interiors architects and set designers working today. For over 30 years, he has explored his desire to imagine new worlds, to tell stories and to engage with others. This interest is rooted in his sense of play and possibility–an endless curiosity that continually drives him to ask, “What if?” What if you could step inside a crystal goblet? What if your environment transformed with every step? What if a restaurant could vanish at a moment's notice? What if your ultimate escapist fantasy was real? Engaging texts by Tony Award-winning playwright and screenplay writer John Guare, Tony Award-winning director and producer Jack O'Brien and Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Justin Davidson–written specially for this publication–and a conversation between Rockwell and acclaimed architect Elizabeth Diller round out this spectacular, celebratory volume.
