New York, NY – Producers Tom Hulce and Ira Pittleman announced today that one of the most read and talked-about novels of the late 20th century, Laura Esquivel’s 1989 masterpiece, Like Water For Chocolate, is being developed for the stage as a brand new musical. Featuring entirely original music by the Grammy Award-winning Latin group La Santa Cecilia, with lyrics by La Santa Cecilia & Pulitzer Prize winner Quiara Alegría Hudes and a book by Lisa Loomer, Like Water For Chocolate will be directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer.

One of the most sensual stories ever told, Like Water For Chocolate centers around an epic battle between familial obligation and romantic desire in turn of the century Mexico, while celebrating the rich land’s culture and cuisine like no novel before or since. This feminist fable of tradition, rebellion, and uncontrollable passions has been leaving readers breathless for more than 30 years. The novel has sold millions of copies around the world and has been published in 45 different languages. In 1993, it was adapted into an Award-winning film by the same name, which became the highest-grossing foreign-language film ever released in the United States and Canada at the time. The film earned ten Ariel Awards® including the Best Picture and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award® for Best Foreign Language Film.

LA SANTA CECILIA began their career by serenading passersby on Los Angeles’ historic Olvera Street, who eventually became a musical phenomenon who defies musical and cultural boundaries. Named after the patron saint of music, La Santa Cecilia is composed of accordionist and requinto player Jose ‘Pepe’ Carlos (bassist), Alex Bendaña (percussionist), Miguel ‘Oso’ Ramirez, and vocalist ‘La Marisoul’. With a captivating voice that sings about love, loss, and everyday struggles, the band has become the voice of a new bicultural generation in the United States, fully immersed in modern music but still close to their Latin American influences and Mexican heritage. They have won a Grammy; toured coast to coast, collaborated with legends including Elvis Costello, Bunbury, Fito Paez; appeared on Conan; and most recently shared the stage with Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones and Pepe Aguilar. La Santa Cecilia burst into the scene in 2011 with the release of their debut album “Noche y Citas.” The album gave them their first nomination at the Latin Grammy Awards for the single ‘La Negra.’ They followed that album with the eclectic “El Valor” in 2012, which was named one of the best albums of the year by NPR’s Alt Latino. “Treinta Días” their major label debut, combining cumbia, reggae, soul, tango, and their L.A. spice to create an album that went on to win the Grammy for Best Latin Rock Album, Alternative or Urban in 2014. For film, they recorded the song “Tu Vida Es Un Escenario” for the award-winning film Cantinflas and collaborated with two-time Grammy Award winner Gustavo Santaolalla on “The Apology Song” for the animated hit film The Book of Life, directed by Mexican director Guillermo del Toro. Their music was also used in the Pixar movie Coco and they created the theme song for the Netflix series “Ingobernable.” The band’s songs have also appeared in popular TV shows like “Weeds,” “Entourage,” and “The Bridge.” In 2015, the band released the song “I Won’t Cry for You,” produced by 17-time Grammy award-winner Sebastian Krys. The song is a fusion of traditional swing and norteño, continuing LSC’s long tradition of genre-bending music. “Buenaventura” was released February 26, 2016 and was nominated for a Latin Grammy in the Best Pop/Rock Album category and was nominated for a Grammy in the “Best Latin Urban, Rock or Alternative” category. In January of 2017, the band again broke new ground by recording a unique visual album of traditional Mexican and Latin American music titled “Amar y Vivir.” The 12-song set was recorded entirely live in 5 days in the streets, bars, and parks of Mexico City. The visual album is an exploration of the bands roots and counts with the collaboration of the iconic Mexican singer Eugenia Leon, Chilean star Mon Laferte and the legendary Mariachi America among others. La Santa Cecilia released their 7th album self-titled; “La Santa Cecilia” on October 18th, 2019.

Nombrada así en honor a la santa patrona de la música, La Santa Cecilia está compuesta por el acordeonista y requinto José “Pepe” Carlos (bajista), Alex Bendaña (percusionista), Miguel “Oso” Ramírez, y el vocalista “La Marisoul“. Con una voz cautivante que canta sobre el amor, la pérdida y las luchas cotidianas, la banda se ha convertido en la voz de una nueva generación bicultural en los Estados Unidos, totalmente inmersa en la música moderna pero aún cercana a sus influencias latinoamericanas y a su herencia mexicana. Buenaventura fue lanzado el 26 de febrero de 2016 y fue nominado para un Grammy Latino en la categoría de “Mejor Álbum Pop / Rock” y fue nominado para un Grammy en la categoría “Mejor Latin Rock, Alternativo, o Música Urbana.” En enero de 2017, la banda volvió a abrir nuevos caminos al grabar un álbum visual único de música tradicional mexicana y latinoamericana titulado “Amar y Vivir”. El conjunto de 12 canciones fue grabado enteramente en vivo en 5 días en las calles, bares y parques de la Ciudad de México. El álbum visual es una exploración de las raíces de la banda y cuenta con la colaboración de la icónica cantante mexicana Eugenia León, la estrella chilena Mon Laferte y el legendario Mariachi América entre otros. La Santa Cecilia lanzó su 7º álbum autotitulado; “La Santa Cecilia” el 18 de octubre de 2019.
