“THE FUTURE OF CINEMA” (THE ECONOMIST)
BEGINNING FALL 2012
New York (July 3, 2012) – On the heels of its most groundbreaking production to date, in which a Central London Warehouse was converted into a futuristic spaceship in which Ridley Scott’s smash hit Prometheus was staged throughout the month of June, Secret Cinema has announced plans to stage its first ever New York production in the Fall of 2012. For the first time, New Yorkers will be able to experience this unique form of “Live Cinema,” the format defined by Future Cinema – creators of Secret Cinema. Live Cinema allows the filmgoer to step inside the film and creates a unique experience and journey, far beyond a traditional 2D or 3D viewing experience. The line between actor and audience member is blurred.
Future Cinema, the creators of Secret Cinema, The Other Cinema, Future Shorts, Secret Screening, and Secret Restaurant, create large-scale cinematic experiences, fusing feature film with music, theatre and live performance. Conceived in 2003, Future Cinema has become one of the world’s most prolific and innovative film organizations. Through exhibition, distribution and live events, our objective is to redefine the way audiences experience film, presenting them in innovative ways on and offline. We aim to connect audiences, brands and filmmakers all over the world and create a global community around challenging, entertaining and stimulating film.
Their smash presentation of Prometheus marked the first time anywhere in the world that Secret Cinema opened the production in tandem with a film’s national theatrical release. The presentation had the full endorsement from director Ridley Scott, allowing cinema-goers to step inside the film and engage with Prometheus in a unique and immersive way where the line between actor and audience member is blurred allowing each to create their own experience and journey. The experience was had by twenty-five-thousand audience members and the presentation grossed a total of £720,000 ($1.1 million) over twenty-eight days, making it the highest grossing screen for the film in the United Kingdom, even besting London's BFI Imax (the top grossing cinema screen in the U.K.). Secret Cinema’s sales figures were generated in spite of the movie and the location remaining a secret throughout the run.
