CONTINUES 40th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION WITH
“MUSIC-THEATRE GROUP TALK & JAM”

New York, NY (September 27, 2011) – Music-Theatre Group (Diane Wondisford, Producing Director) continues their 40th Anniversary celebration with this week’s “Music-Theatre Group Talk & Jam,” an exciting evening looking toward new works coming up this season and next, to take place on Saturday, October 1st at 10 Jay Street, 9th Floor in DUMBO at 7:00 p.m.

“Music-Theatre Group Talk & Jam” will feature conversations with artists Douglas Cuomo (composer of Winter’s Journey), Daniel Fish & Susie Ibarra, (director and composer of Saturnalia), and Nico Muhly (composer of Dark Sisters) and will also present excerpts from their upcoming works. The event will be moderated by the ever-inventive David Herskovits, founder and artistic director of Target Margin Theater.

Such is the dilemma facing Eliza, the heroine of Dark Sisters, a suspenseful, emotional, and lyrical depiction of one woman's struggle with obedience and love. And yet not just one woman's. As a member of the Fundamentalist Church of the Latter Day Saints, a polygamous sect based in the southwestern US, Eliza holds the fate of her “sister wives, ” and all their children, in her hands. Inspired by a series of raids of such sects, Dark Sisters asks what it costs for anyone to be faithful – whether to a marriage or a religion. Dark Sisters is a co-commission and co-production of Gotham Chamber Opera, Music-Theatre Group, and Opera Company of Philadelphia. World Premiere Performances, November 9-19, 2011.
Saturnalia, a co-production with Roulette in its new Brooklyn home, tells the story of three American men visiting Bangkok—their version of paradise—who find themselves confronted with a metaphysical detective at a mysterious club. World Premiere Performances, February 2-5, 2012.
With Winter's Journey Douglas Cuomo has composed a gripping jazz-inflected musical response to Müller’s 19th century lyrical cycle of unrequited love and madness. David Schweizer directs a mezzo-soprano and Cuomo's instrumental trio. Performance dates TBD.

The Music-Theatre Group has held a singular place in the lives of culture-driven New Yorkers for 40 years. Founded by Lyn Austin and currently led by Producing Director Diane Wondisford, M-TG blurs the lines between music, theatre and opera. M-TG is currently co-commissioning and co-producing the new opera Dark Sisters with Gotham Chamber Opera and Opera Company of Philadelphia.
