New York, NYSPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark, Broadway’s record breaking new show, celebrates its one-year anniversary on Broadway today, Thursday, June 14, 2012.  The fastest show in Broadway history to reach one million audience members, in the past year SPIDER-MAN also shattered the record for the highest single-week gross of any show in Broadway history for the week ending Sunday, January 1, 2012; shattered the Broadway single-week attendance record that same week, playing to 17,375 audience members (100.02% capacity of The Foxwoods Theatre); set the weekly box office record of $2,941,790.20; and shattered the annual box office record of the Foxwoods Theatre by almost $35 million.

Embarking on its second smash-hit year on Broadway, SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark began preview performances on November 28, 2010, and has become one of the most famous theatrical events in Broadway history, playing to packed houses and standing, screaming ovations nightly. The show officially opened on Tuesday, June 14, 2011.

At tonight’s performance, SPIDER-MAN will welcome dozens of super-fans of the show, including Christine Antosca who will be attending the production for the 100th time!

“Reaching this milestone is made so much sweeter by the knowledge that we’ll be marking the occasion alongside the show’s die-hard fans,” said producers Michael Cohl and Jeremiah J. Harris.  “Without such enthusiasm for the production, there is no way we’d be here celebrating.”

SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark is Broadway’s most popular new show and, in the past year, the production has been seen by more than 1 million audience members from around the world. It features music and lyrics by 22-time Grammy® Award-winners Bono and The Edge, direction by Philip William McKinley (The Boy From Oz),  and a book co-written by Julie Taymor, Glen Berger (Underneath The Lintel) and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa (Fantastic Four and Spider-Man comics, “Big Love”). Scenic Designer George Tsypin and Costume Designer Eiko Ishioka are winners of Outer Critics Circle Awards and were recently nominated for Tony® Awards for their work on SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark.

The world’s most recognizable super hero leaps off the comic book pages and onto the Broadway stage in SPIDER-MAN Turn Off The Dark.  Peter Parker’s ordinary teenage life takes a turn for the extraordinary when he’s bitten by a genetically altered spider and suddenly finds himself endowed with incredible superpowers.  Parker quickly learns that with great power comes great responsibility as he tries to juggle the demands of high school and home life, while battling the Green Goblin and his band of super villains as they try to take down New York City and destroy everything Peter holds dear – including the beautiful girl-next-door, Mary Jane Watson.  This high-flying groundbreaking and history-making production brings this story – inspired by more than fifty years of Marvel comic books – thrillingly to life!
