Banderas produced Godspell alongside his theatre company, Teatro del Soho CaixaBank, Estudio Caribe, and Aragón, the production’s director and musical director. The show began its run in Malaga, Spain, on November 3, 2022 and was a great success with audiences and critics alike. The album marks Concord Theatricals Recordings’ third collaboration with Banderas and the Soho CaixaBank Theatre, following the first-ever Spanish language recordings of A Chorus Line and Company.
“Slowly but surely, we are progressively creating a collection of musical theatre shows, originally conceived in the English language, and which we now present in Spanish,” said Banderas. Godspell is the third musical to occupy its place in this collection which was launched by Concord and Teatro del Soho CaixaBank just a few years ago with A Chorus Line, continued with Sondheim’s Company and now also includes Stephen Schwartz’s show. The recordings, far from being just isolated projects presented as musical documents, are inextricably linked to the production and presentation of the three shows, both at Teatro del Soho CaixaBank in Malaga and other Spanish venues, to resounding critical acclaim and the applause and respect of audiences who have packed out the performances. The theatre’s management team aims to continue expanding the collection with the 2024 productions of They Are Playing Our Song and Gypsy. We have a firm commitment to making the Spanish-speaking public aware of the scope, depth, and mastery of these great works of musical theatre, which are the pillars of one of the most loved and applauded genres worldwide. A big hug in C major.”
“We’re very happy to continue our relationship with Antonio and Teatro del Soho CaixaBank,” said Sean Patrick Flahaven, Chief Theatricals Executive for Concord. “They continue to produce and record the highest quality Spanish versions of classic American musicals which we can bring to the wider world.”

BIOGRAPHIES
Godspell, conceived and originally directed by John-Michael Tebelak, was the first significant musical theatre work of legendary composer and three-time GRAMMY and Academy Award winner Stephen Schwartz. The iconic show boasts beloved, chart-topping songs including “Day by Day,” “Prepare Ye (The Way of the Lord),” and “Learn Your Lessons Well.” Originally produced on the New York Stage by Edgar Lansbury, Stuart Duncan and Joseph Beruh, Godspell became an off-Broadway staple 1971, opening at La MaMa and soon transferring to The Cherry Lane Theatre and Promenade Theatre, where it ran for over 2,000 performances. The first Broadway production opened in 1976 at Broadhurst Theatre. Since its Broadway debut, the musical has led to revivals off-Broadway, on Broadway and internationally, touring productions around the world and a 1973 film.
Antonio Banderas (Producer) has been one of the most outstanding international actors of his generation. He has received critical acclaim for his roles in film, television, and theatre, as well as for his work behind the camera as a director.
He has worked with some of the best directors and actors in Hollywood: Robert Rodriguez’s Desperado opposite Salma Hayek and the sequel Once Upon a Time in Mexico, opposite Johnny Depp; Original Sin with Angelina Jolie; Alan Parker’s Evita opposite Madonna (for which he received his first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor); The Mask of Zorro, by Martin Campbell, opposite Catherine Zeta-Jones (second Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor), and the sequel The Legend of Zorro; Neil Jordan’s Interview with the Vampire with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt; Jonathan Demme’s Philadelphia alongside Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington; Bille August’s House of the Spirits with Meryl Streep and Glenn Close; and Femme Fatale by Brian de Palma. He was nominated for his third Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his performance as the infamous Pancho Villa on HBO’s “And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself” in 2003. In 2005 he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
In 2003, he was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for Nine, his Broadway debut, a Roundabout Theatre Company production inspired by Fellini’s 8 1/2, and which garnered him a Drama Desk Award for Best Actor, as well as Outer Critics Circle, Drama League, and Theatre World Awards.

In 2019 he promoted the Teatro del Soho CaixaBank project in his hometown, Malaga. The theatre opened with the musical A Chorus Line, its first production with John Breglio and Banderas himself as actor, co-director and producer of the show which was a great success with audiences and critics alike.
