New York, NY – Last night, the hugely anticipated revival of Meredith Willson’s The Music Man, starring two-time Tony Award®, Grammy Award®, and Emmy Award®-winning star Hugh Jackman as Professor Harold Hill and two-time Tony Award winner Sutton Foster as Marian Paroo opened triumphantly on Broadway.

Among the first nighters were, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, New York Governor Kathy Hochul, Mayor Eric Adams, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Librarian of Congress Dr. Carla Hayden, Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Bradley Cooper, Anne Hathaway, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Seth Meyers, Cynthia Nixon, Mariska Hargitay & Peter Hermann, Gayle King, Donna Murphy, Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karen, Michael Kors, Agnes Gund, Fran Lebowitz, Diane Sawyer, Jordan Roth, Brenda Vacarro, Justin Peck, Paul Tazewell, Randy Rainbow, Darren Starr, Will Swenson, and many more.

The evening was punctuated by an all-city high school marching band made up of 50+ students from every borough. The celebration began with remarks by producer Kate Horton introducing New York City School’s Chancellor, David C. Banks. New York City Mayor Eric Adams addressed the cast, while the Librarian of Congress, Dr. Carla Hayden went backstage to greet her favorite librarian on Broadway.

The Music Man is subsidizing 10,000 tickets at just $20 each to New York City students, their families, and their teachers to help foster a love and appreciation for the arts by making Broadway more accessible. This broad effort is built around partnerships with the New York City Department of Education and a dozen local youth non-profits including Artists Striving to End Poverty, Art Start, Arts For All, Arthur Miller Foundation, On Broadway Performing Arts Training Program, Young People’s Chorus of NYC, Education Through Music, Rosie’s Theatre Kids, R.Evolucion Latina, and Broadway Bridges.

The production, directed by four-time Tony Award winner Jerry Zaks, with choreography by Tony Award winner Warren Carlyle, also stars Tony Award winner Shuler Hensley as Marcellus Washburn, Tony Award winner Jefferson Mays as Mayor Shinn, Tony Award winner Jayne Houdyshell as Mrs. Shinn, and Tony Award winner Marie Mullen as Mrs. Paroo, Remy Auberjonois as Charlie Cowell, Gino Cosculluela as Tommy Djilas, and Emma Crow as Zaneeta Shinn. Joining the cast are Benjamin Pajak as Winthrop, Kayla Teruel as Amaryllis, Garrett Long as Ethel Toffelmier, Linda Mugleston as Alma Hix, Jessica Sheridan as Maud Dunlop, Rema Webb as Mrs. Squires, Phillip Boykin as Olin Britt, Eddie Korbich as Jacey Squires, Daniel Torres as Ewart Dunlop, Nicholas Ward as Oliver Hix, Lance Roberts as Constable Locke, Max Clayton as Standby for Harold Hill, and Nick Alvino, Jordan Beall, Ronnie S. One of the most universally cherished treasures of the American musical theater, The Music Man was an instant smash hit when it premiered on Broadway on December 19, 1957. It went on to win five Tony Awards, including the prize for Best Musical, and ran for 1,375 performances. The original cast album held the number one position on the Billboard charts and stayed on the album charts for 245 weeks. The recording won the first-ever Grammy Award for Best Original Cast Album. The Smithsonian Institution ranks The Music Man as one of the “great glories of American popular culture.”

The Music Man creative team includes four-time Tony Award winner Santo Loquasto (Scenic & Costume Design), five-time Tony Award winner Brian MacDevitt (Lighting Design), Tony Award winner Scott Lehrer (Sound Design), Luc Verschueren for Campbell Young and Associates (Hair, Wigs, & Makeup Design), Tony Award winner Jonathan Tunick (Orchestrations), David Chase (Vocal and Dance Arrangements), and Patrick Vaccariello (Musical Director).
